Samba – Water Break

Anxiety Cat Does the Samba

I think the Samba is the single most-hated rhythm in all of Zumba. It’s hard – even many instructors have trouble with it. And Anxiety Cat…he has the most trouble of all.

Treadmill Desks (aka get off your butt!)

Treadmill Desk

While I love Zumba with all my heart, I make a living my sitting on my rear end all day long, communing with my laptop instead of dancing the merengue. I bet some of you are in the same boat. Did you know that a study showed that obese people tend to sit 2 hours or more per day than people with a healthier body weight?

My friend Shelly found a great resource that solves this problem – the treadmill desk! Her DIY’er husband built her one and she’s used it so much that she burned out the motor. I thought it sounded pretty hard, you but walk slowly…you just do it all (work)day long! She said she lost 7 pounds the first week.

Now, I have a treadmill, but I don’t have the ability to build a treadmill desk myself, and between work and coaching baseball, my husband doesn’t have time. I looked online and some are between $2000 and $3000! Then I found a RELATIVELY inexpensive treadmill desk at Amazon. I really don’t want to spend the money yet, so I’m taking a half measure and trying out working at my kitchen counter (which is bar-height).

I’d LOVE to hear from anyone else who has tried this! Did you like it? Could you still get your work done? Was the investment worth it?

ZumbAtomic – Week 1

Last week marked my first week teaching ZumbAtomic at the aftercare program for my kids’ school. It was fun but eye-opening!!! The after-care program is already split into two groups by ages, so I’m doing the Lil’ Starz program for Kindergarten through Grade 2, and Big Starz for Grades 3-6.

The Lil’ Starz group loves to talk!!! That’s the first thing I noticed, and probably the hardest thing to manage. I don’t want them to feel ignored, but it’s not story-telling time, so I’m trying to find a balance. I love their enthusiasm. At this age, it’s mostly about having fun. The group was pretty equally divided between boys and girls, and all of them were eager to participate. We did “Freezer” – aka the penguin song – and they were more than willing to dance around like a bunch of penguinos!

The Big Starz kids are much more about performance and getting it right. They loved the music most of all, and several sang along to the warm-up and cool-down songs, which I had gotten from Kidz Bop CDs so they would know them. For the main song, we did “Say Hey (I Love You)”. Afterwards, one of the girls came up and asked me to write down the name of the song so she could download it. With the Big Starz I also only had 3 boys, including my son. The others declined to participate ;)

I’m looking forward to the classes this week. I have the songs picked out and the choreography almost ready. Should be fun!

Multitasking

I’m a very busy working mom with three kids, and some days I think I’m just not going to make it. Yesterday was one of those days. I have new routines to practice for both Zumbatomic (the demo tonight) and the regular Zumba class I’m teaching this weekend. So I took time to practice while waiting on my older daughter to take ballet class yesterday – and I practiced my routines, with my iPhone and headphones, right in the lobby. Everyone looked at me strangely, but when they asked questions I told them all about the classes and it turned into a marketing opportunity!

Sometimes it’s all about letting go of your inhibitions – like not being comfortable dancing in the ballet class lobby. :)
